The Alcazaba of Malaga

alcazar

Located at the foot of the Gibralfaro hill, in the city center, the Alcazaba de Malaga fort was built in the 11th century during Muslim rule (in fact, its name means “citadel” in Arabic). Touring it means exploring an impressive complex of merlon walls, watchtowers with small windows and exuberant gardens that create a magical environment while you enjoy magnificent views of the city, port and Mediterranean sea.

The Alcazaba de Malaga is one of the most important and best conserved Muslim works in Spain. Next to it is the Castillo de Gibralfaro, a splendid fortress from the 14th century located 132 meters above sea level, once the most impenetrable fortress of all of Al-Andalus. Built to protect the Alcazaba, it is connected to it through the Coracha, a walled road that was its only entry point. Its strategic location next to the Roman theater and Customs building also makes it a required visit for culture lovers.

Boat trip down the Costa del Sol

Navigating down the bay of Malaga is an absolutely fascinating experience: you can choose between gorgeous trips on a catamaran at sunset, lively boat parties that leave from different points on the coast, or excursions to watch the sea life.

Sunset from the sea will let you enjoy a different perspective of Malaga. As you travel away from the coast, you will see the silhouette of the city with its iconic buildings, like the cathedral and Castillo de Gibralfaro, as well as the port and the characteristic Farola, a lighthouse and icon of Malaga thanks to its wide, chubby form. If you wish, you can even take a refreshing swim in the sea.

If you are looking for something more lively, you will find boat excursions that combine fun and partying, featuring live music or DJs, dance floors, drinks onboard and an incredibly relaxed atmosphere. If you like nature, you can travel down the coast of Malaga while you explore the sea life, whether from the boat or while snorkeling. You can watch the dolphins and enjoy the southern breeze. These excursions are not limited to the city of Malaga, but also leave from other points of the province, including Benalmádena, Fuengirola and Marbella. Whatever your preference, in Malaga you will find the perfect option for you.

Route down the Caminito del Rey

The Caminito del Rey, located in the center of the province of Malaga, is a spectacular path that travels along the Los Gaitanes gorge, a natural canyon on the Guadalhorce river. Almost 8 kilometers long, it is a location full of nature and history. It has been known as the Caminito del Rey (King’s Path) since the time King Alfonso XIII traveled down it to inaugurate the Guadalhorce-Guadalteba reservoirs.

The path, which can be completed in about four hours, offers a unique experience that is enjoyed by tourists today from all over the world. In the past, it was considered one of the most dangerous in the world, but now that it has been restored and reconditioned, it can even be enjoyed by children eight years and older. It is recommended that you reserve tickets in advance and, if possible, through the website, since there may be a large number of visitors.

The Caminito del Rey is a unique experience for the most adventurous nature lovers, since it combines excitement, natural beauty and adrenaline in a spectacular environment.

Excursion to the Cuevas de Nerja

The Caves of Nerja, discovered in 1959, are a natural and archeological treasure, as well as one of the complexes of greatest topographic development in Andalusia. Visiting them is a journey to the past: their stalactites and stalagmites recreate incredible formations, while the cave paintings found in them are among the oldest in the world, dating back 42,000 years.

The Sala de la Cascada (or Sala del Ballet) stands out. It contains impressive formations similar to a rock waterfall (called gours). Shows and events are held in it, especially in the summer months. Likewise, in the Sala del Cataclismo, almost 100 meters long, is the largest column in the world: its 32 meters in height and 13 x 7-meter base secured it a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

The Cuevas de Nerja are an essential attraction and a place of great beauty and geological importance. If you decide to spend a few days in Nerja, be sure to visit the Balcón de Europa, the cliffs of Maro or its beautiful beaches.
