What do you need to know before traveling to Madrid?

Practical information

Madrid is a fascinating and welcoming European city that will make you want to return again and again. However, like on any trip abroad, it is important to have some details in mind so your vacation is a success.

FAQs

  • What documentation do I need to travel to Madrid?

If you are a European citizen, all you have to bring with you is a national ID or current passport. (It is also a good idea to have your European Health Insurance Card.) If you are from a non-European country that does not require a visa and your stay is less than 90 days, you will need a valid passport. For tourists from other countries, the best option is to visit the Spanish embassy and request information about all the necessary steps and documents, or visit the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

  • Do I need travel insurance to visit Madrid?

Spain is one of the safest countries in the world and has excellent health infrastructure. If you are a citizen of the European Union, you have the right to receive the healthcare you need free of cost. Before traveling, we recommend you request your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the equivalent document certifying your participation in a medical insurance system in a member State. In the case of an emergency, medical or otherwise, call 112, a free telephone number that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and has a translation service for many languages.

  • Is it dangerous for my health to travel to Madrid?

No, you do not. You do not need any vaccines or special health-related precautions, according to the Ministry of Health. Also, if you are a European citizen, you will have the same rights to healthcare as insured Spanish citizens when you present your European Health Insurance Card.

  • How to pay in Madrid?

The euro is the legal tender in Madrid. You will not have to exchange currencies if your country is part of the eurozone. You can use cash to make purchases, though most places accept debit and credit cards. However, it is advisable to travel with a modest amount of cash and use you card whenever possible. Visa and Mastercard are usually accepted. American Express is accepted to a lesser degree.

  • What are the time zones in Madrid?

The time zone for the province of Madrid is UTC/GMT+1 in the winter and UTC+1/GMT+2 in the summer. This is the same time zone as any of the other autonomous communities on Spanish territory, with the exception of the Canary Islands.

  • What language do they speak in Madrid?

In Madrid there is only one official language: Spanish. However, most hotel and tourism employees will be able to communicate with you in English and, depending on the area of the province, other languages as well, like German or Italian.

  • What should I pack to visit Madrid?

First of all, sunscreen is recommended at this destination, since the occurrence of UV rays is very high, especially in the summer. Therefore, whenever you are in outdoor spaces, it is a good idea to bring it with you and apply it often. You will also need adapters to connect or charge your electronic devices at 230 V. The plugs and outlets you will find in Madrid are type C and F. Of course, if you are coming in the summer, remember to bring a hat and fill your bag with light-colored clothing, made of cool materials. The winters are cold, so we recommend packing coats, scarves and gloves in your suitcase. If you are going to be walking a lot, bring appropriate shoes so your walks are comfortable and safe.
