What do you need to know before traveling to Costa Mujeres - Cancun?

Practical information

Costa Mujeres has everything you need to relax and enjoy a comfortable stay. However, like on any trip abroad, it’s important to keep in mind some details so your Caribbean vacation is a success.

FAQs

  • What documentation do I need to travel to Cancun?

If you travel to Mexico from the United States, you must present a valid US passport and the official document (FMM) issued by the National Immigration Institute. And if you go by car, remember to take along your current vehicle registration.

If you have European citizenship, simply carry a valid passport with you. Tourists from other countries may need a visa, so the best option is to go to the Mexican Embassy or consult the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The maximum stay in the country is 180 days .

  • Do I need to get vaccinated to travel to Cancun?

There’s no mandatory vaccination requirement for travel to Cancun or Mexico in general, although it’s recommended that travelers consult their doctor for personalized information.

  • Is it dangerous for my health to travel to Cancun?

No, not at all. The main health risks are related to food poisoning. So it’s advisable to drink bottled mineral water and be cautious when trying local food, especially if you have a low tolerance for hot or spicy food. The Yucatan sun is intense in the summer, so it’s a good idea to wear high SPF sunscreen, a hat and cool clothing, and to hydrate frequently throughout the day.

  • How do you pay for things in Cancun?

The peso is the legal currency in Mexico, although many tourist establishments accept the US dollar. You can generally pay both in cash and with credit and debit cards (mainly Visa and Mastercard). However, it’s advisable to travel with a small amount of cash, since some small businesses only accept this method of payment.

  • What language is spoken in Cancun?

Spanish is the official language in Mexico. If you don't speak it, don't worry, the vast majority of hospitality staff speak English.  In certain rural areas you can hear or see words written in Yucatec Maya, the local language. Don't forget to learn some simple phrases in Spanish; as well being a sign of respect, it will be very useful for getting around in Cancun.

  • What do I put in my suitcase to travel to Cancun?

What you pack will largely depend on the type of activities you are going to do, but remember to include these items:

    • Important travel documents such as passport.

    • Credit or debit card and some cash.
