Going shopping in Punta Cana: stores and markets

Dive into Dominican culture by exploring the traditional markets.

There is no better way to get to know the people and customs of a country than through its art and culture. Dominican craftwork is known for the quality of its finishes, the beauty of its shapes and the symbolism found in each piece. In stores on main streets you will find exquisite jewelry made with amber and larimar, Taino ceramics, and wood carvings representing exotic pre-Columbian deities.

It is also worth checking out the boutiques in shopping centers or all inclusive resorts. There you can acquire items made by local designers, pieces of art, and items from major international brands.

Puntacana Village

This is one of the most spectacular and complete malls in the Caribbean. Located in the main tourist area, just two kilometers from the Punta Cana international airport and less than 35 kilometers from the main hotel centers, travelers will find the best selection of stores from large international brands, excellent restaurants, a large variety of services and a fantastic entertainment area. It is perfect for a fun day of shopping for the entire family.

Caribbean Street

If you want to have a different shopping experience, there is nothing like visiting the colorful stands and shops on Caribbean Street. On top of being able to choose among endless items (clothing, jewelry, crafts, souvenirs), it is the perfect excuse to stroll under the palm trees after a relaxing day at the beach and see the most popular and vibrant streets of Punta Cana.

Plaza Bávaro

The street culture of the Dominican Republic is an important clue to the country’s identity, where it is common to find the doors always open. In Plaza Bávaro you will find an authentic street market with stands and bars where you can drink an ice cold beer. It is also the perfect place to buy local crafts and jewelry made with larimar, the precious stone of the Dominican Republic. This aquamarine mineral is only found in this area, specifically in the Los Chupaderos mine, 10 kilometers from the city of Barahona, so it is considered a national symbol. Jewelers usually polish it and set it in silver to decorate jewelry and objects.

Plaza Bibijagua

Located at Bavaro beach, this affordable market has more than 100 stands with items of every kind, such as beach clothing, shells, rum, coffee and rolled Dominican cigars. This plaza is not only a shopping center but also a vibrant venue where culture and commerce collide, offering visitors a view into Dominican life and traditions.

Plaza Uvero Alto

This shopping center has two small markets and dozens of kiosks full of Haitian-style paintings, wooden decorations, amber and larimar jewelry, and unique ceramics. The bank and ATMs here make shopping easier. The plaza is also a meeting point for lovers of local cuisine. It is a good place to taste delicious Caribbean dishes and refreshing tropical drinks in a welcoming environment.

Blue Mall

Blue Mall is more than a mall with stores from every brand. Events are held every day, such as children’s dance shows, product presentations and even Oktoberfest. It also has a wide variety of food and drinks, with restaurant options for every taste. It’s only 15 minutes away from the hotel area and 10 minutes from the Marina. It opens Monday through Sunday.

Plaza Higüeyana

If you’re looking for a more exotic or traditional souvenir of your time in Punta Cana, your best bet is to take a “guagua” (bus) and visit Plaza Higüeyana, located in the outskirts of the municipality of Higüey, the best market for crafts and local products in the area. Far from the main tourism centers, here you will discover the authentic environment of a Caribbean market. You can find many items at its stands, ranging from authentic pieces of Taino art (stone and wood figures representing ancestral deities) to the famous Dominican rum, mamajuana or smooth and aromatic coffee.
