What to see and do in Cap Cana

The best example of sophistication in the Dominican Republic.

Although a favorite pastime of those visiting Cap Cana is to relax and sunbathe at one of its fabulous all-inclusive resorts, this Caribbean corner offers much more: excursions to paradisiacal islands, such as Isla Saona; plans to discover the extraordinary natural wealth; majestic cenotes with transparent waters or ecotourism parks where you can swim, snorkel or dive. In addition, golf fans are in luck, since Cap Cana is home to one of the best courses in the world, Punta Espada. A space designed by the Jack Nickalus with the Caribbean Sea as a backdrop.

Catamaran tour to IslaSaona

Isla Saona

From Cap Cana you can take a catamaran tour to Isla Saona, a nature reserve that stands out for its extraordinary natural wealth. After about an hour-long journey, you'll be able to enjoy shallow waters filled with starfish and sea turtles. Its coasts are so beautiful that large productions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Blue Lagoon were filmed there. To the south, you can visit the picturesque fishing village of Mano Juan and the Flamingo Lagoon

To the west, near the town of Catuano, explore the Cotubanamá caves (Cotubanama National Park), with their stalactites, stalagmites, and Taino pictographs. The excursion usually includes a visit to this park, where you can explore the local flora and fauna, as well as interact with starfish in the Palmilla natural pool.

Whale Watching

The Dominican Republic is known for the rich biodiversity hidden beneath its turquoise waters, such as magnificent coral reefs, conch, spiny lobsters, tropical fish, and, of course, humpback whales. The Humpback Whale Sanctuary of Cap Cana is located within the Bay of Samaná, a stretch of land about thirty miles long in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, home to more than 6,000 plant species and 7,000 animal species, some of which are unique in the world.

Along the coast of Samaná, you will find many establishments where you can rent a boat with a guide to enjoy the spectacle of these impressive marine animals.

Between January and March, more than 1,500 cetaceans return to the bay to court, mate, give birth, and frolic in its warm waters. The observation period starts in mid-January and ends in late March, although the best time for sightings is in February.

Golfing at Punta Espada

Punta Espada is the first of three golf courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Cap Cana. It is considered one of the best in the world by experts. In fact, it has been ranked number one in the Caribbean and Mexico for eleven consecutive years by Golfweek magazine and as one of the top fifty courses to play by the PGA Tour. In his design, Nicklaus not only sought to integrate the space perfectly with the tropical landscape of palm trees and lagoons but also to cater to players of all levels, from novices to experts.

Visit to the Hoyo Azul Cenote

One of the most popular excursions in Cap Cana is the trip to the Hoyo Azul cenote in the Scape Park adventure and recreation park. The cenotes are spectacular natural freshwater pools formed in limestone and porous soils by rainfall. Rainwater, when in contact with air and plant debris, becomes slightly acidic, which gradually dissolves the limestone rocks.

This process allows water to penetrate the subsoil and accumulate in these cavities, forming large aquifers and underground rivers. The main attraction of Hoyo Azul is that it is located at the foot of a seventy-five-meter-high cliff. The park, surrounded by a lush tropical forest, boasts a wide variety of exotic local flora and fauna, such as the carefully tended orchid garden, perfect for strolling and learning about the native biodiversity.

Scape Park

The best way to spend a fun day with the family is to visit Scape Park. This ecotourism amusement park offers countless cultural and educational experiences for adults and children. From the entrance, you begin a thirty-minute walk among extraordinarily beautiful mangroves, where you can recognize abundant native flora and fauna. After crossing a suspension bridge with extraordinary panoramic views, you arrive at the majestic Hoyo Azul, one of the most spectacular cenotes, famous for being at the foot of a seventy-five-meter-high cliff and for its incomparable turquoise waters.

Additionally, you can enjoy other activities such as crossing an impressive waterfall on a zipline, exploring underground caves with stalactites and stalagmites, or delving into the island's past through the Cultural Route, an authentic open-air history museum. For more relaxed plans, Scape Park offers an exclusive beach club and opportunities for snorkeling in tropical waters.
